The Nothing Phone (1) is a mid-range smartphone from a company founded by Carl Pei, one of the co-founders of OnePlus. When launched, the Nothing Phone (1) would not be available in the US simply because of the difficulty for emerging smartphone brands to succeed in the US market without a major carrier partner. In an interview with CNBCthat may soon change.

Pei confirms that Nothing is “in discussions with some carriers in the US to potentially launch a future product there”, and while he hasn’t confirmed if it’s a smartphone, that’s strongly involved in competition discussions with Apple among Gen Z users in the United States. “There’s a challenge with Android where iOS is becoming more and more dominant,” says Pei. “They have a very strong connection with iMessage, with AirDrop, especially among Gen Z. So that’s a growing concern for me.”

Pei says, “It’s definitely a market where there’s already a lot of interest in our products. And if we launched our smartphones there, I’m sure we could achieve significant growth. Meanwhile, Nothing expects its revenue to be significantly higher in 2022 – from around $20 million in 2021 to $250 million in 2022. Nothing has also doubled the number of employees to now reach more of 400.

The objective is to be profitable in 2024 […] We are not profitable right now. And this year has been made even more difficult because of the exchange rate. We pay a lot of our COGS in USD but we make money in Pounds, Euros, Indian Rupees – so everything is devalued against USD. – Carl Pei

Shortly after the interview was published, Carl Pei confirmed on Twitter that the “Phone (2) won’t be launching anytime soon” and that “we won’t be producing dozens of products a year like many others. “.

Pei also reiterated that the phone (1) continues to be the company’s focus and that it is working on future software updates coming with Android 13.
