Bubba Watson Explains Why His Driver Head Snapped Off at Travelers Championship

Bubba Watson broke his driver on the second hole at the Travelers Championship on Friday. Bubba’s driver broke on the impact of a tee shot, but despite that, the ball flew over 260 yards and was right in the middle of the fairway. He eventually made a birdie on that hole and clinched the solo lead.

The three-time Travelers Championship winner explained it in the post-round press conference.“It’s one of the things where the driver is travel, heat, cold, whatever it is, over time, overuse, my driver head popped off. It’s the shaft right above the hosel. And It cracked, broke, whatever you want to call it.”

“Did it probably – the last time it happened might have been Korea, Presidents Cup in Korea. I remember right before the first tee on the driving range. Again, nobody has ever been hit by it, and luckily DJ was just out of the way, and it didn’t reach the crowd, so nobody got hurt, hit. Nobody in my group knew where the ball was.”

According to the revised USGA rules, a player may replace a club — but only if it is damaged during the round by an outside influence, natural forces, or by someone other than the player or his or her caddie. And in Bubba’s case, it is a natural force since it broke unintentionally during his tee shot. So Bubba got a new driver after a couple of holes, and this what he said jokingly.

“Once you hit, you’re focused on where the driver’s head goes. So, again, luckily – but if I was going to hit anybody, I was hoping it would be Brooks. But I missed him, though. Not that good of an aimer. It’s one of those things that happened before, and I always have a backup. They brought me the backup two holes later, and I played with that the rest of the day.”

Bubba got his new driver on the 4th hole. And after that, he made three consecutive birdies on 5, 6, and 7. But on the last hole, he misread a putt which forced him to drop a shot. Currently, Bubba Watson is just a stroke behind the leader Jason Day and will look to remain in the last group before going in the ultimate round on Sunday.
