Brighton’s defensive issues mount as Dan Burn ruled out of season opener
An insight into the issues facing Brighton’s backline ahead of their season-opener has been provided on Friday.
Burnley vs Brighton
The 2021/22 Premier League season kicks off a week today when Arsenal and Brentford face off on Friday evening.
There are then several sides in action on Saturday, August 14th, including Brighton.
The Seagulls will kick off their campaign away to Sean Dyche’s Burnley.
Brighton finished last campaign down in 16th, but they did have a solid defensive record and created a lot of chances, albeit without finishing a good chunk of them.
As a result, most Brighton fans were likely pretty optimistic heading into this season, and were no doubt expecting to get off to a positive start vs Burnley.
Brighton’s defensive issues
However, as mentioned above, Brighton are having some issues with their defence in pre-season.
First up, they have of course sold Ben White to Arsenal this summer. The 23-year-old was a key figure for Graham Potter and co. last term and will no doubt be a big miss.
Next, there was an expectation that Tariq Lamptey would be back fit for the start of 2021/22. However, Potter did not sound too optimistic about the right-back’s fitness recently:
“He is not progressing as well as we would like. Because of the nature of the injury, we have to be really careful with him. It is still frustrating at the moment.”
And The Athletic have reported that Lamptey has been ruled out of the start of the season.
The same report also confirmed that Dan Burn, who picked up a knock vs Luton last weekend, is out injured and is likely to miss Brighton’s three league games before the international break with knee ligament damage.
Elsewhere, Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster are yet to play a single minute of pre-season football. So, whilst they may technically be available vs Burnley, said duo are unlikely to be at their sharpest for the Seagulls.
