BOE introduces 27-inch gaming monitor with 500Hz refresh rate: report

BOE Technology has introduced a 27-inch Full HD gaming monitor that boasts a 500Hz refresh rate, according to a report. The monitor is said to offer 8-channel eDP (DisplayPort) output support, true 8-bit color output, and 1ms response time. The monitor does not use OLED technology but instead uses a special oxide semiconductor display technology that BOE claims to have developed. Currently, gaming monitors with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz are in demand, and some companies are offering displays with refresh rates of up to 360Hz.

According to a report by MyDrivers, the BOE monitor also features an integrated gate driver circuit built into the matrix substrate and a high-transmittance thin-film optical pattern for improved performance (translated from Chinese). The price of the monitor with an unprecedented refresh rate of 500 Hz has not yet been announced, and its mass production is expected to take some time. Also, the feasibility and usability of these high-end monitors at present might be limited. A separate report from MyDrivers says it’s too hard for current games to run at 500 frames per second (fps).

Game titles like CS:GO, for example, max out at 360fps at 1440p with Intel’s Core i9-12900K and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080. The game maxed out at 343fps at 1440p. second in Full HD resolution, according to the report, which also pointed out that running a game at such a high frame rate requires too much power, which might be possible after “another generation or two of upgrades” . In fact, according to a list from Nvidia, except one, the maximum refresh rate supported by a G-Sync gaming monitor at Full HD resolution is 360Hz. Only the 27-inch QHD Asus PG27AQN supports the 360Hz refresh rate at the moment.
