Black Panther game: EA is reportedly developing a single-player Wakanda title

Black Panther could soon be a single-player open-world video game, according to a new report. According to gaming journalist Jeff Grubb, EA is the latest studio to jump on the Marvel hype train, and is currently working on a title based on the superhero Wakandan. The game, codenamed Project Rainier, is being developed by an unnamed new studio led by former Monolith vice president Kevin Stephens. The news comes shortly after Marvel Studios unveiled the first official trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at San Diego Comic-Con 2022.

As Grubb revealed on his Game Mess stream, Black Panther by EA will be a solo affair, with the studio trying to rebuild on the success of developer Respawn Entertainment’s heavily scripted Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The title is currently in early development with minimal details. But according to him, the postulate is posed following the death of Black Panther at the start of the game. Players will then be tasked with completing a set of challenges or trials, in hopes of becoming the new incarnation and King of Wakanda.

This doesn’t necessarily allude to the death of King T’Challa, as we have no idea of the Black Panther game universe or timeline. In the comics, Wakanda was first ruled by King T’Chaka, who got into trouble with Ulysses Klaw. , the villain obsessed with Vibranium (played by Andy Serkis in the first Marvel movie), ultimately leading to his death. Returning to his homeland after graduating from college, T’Challa secretly participated in an open challenge to become the Black Panther we know now. Could we consider an origin story with EA’s game?

Internally, EA refers to it as Project Rainier – as in Mount Rainier, Washington. According to Grubb, the development team is stationed at a new studio in Seattle, “founded by Monolith Productions VP and Head of Studio Kevin Stephens. So yeah, this is an EA published game.

Monolith Productions is known for its Middle-earth titles – Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War – both published by WB Games. Last May, Stephens joined Electronic Arts and it was confirmed that he was working on a new open-world action-adventure title – which aligns perfectly with Black Panther.

This is Black Panther’s second appearance in a video game, following the limited-time challenge event in 2020’s Marvel’s Avengers – released by Square Enix.

As mentioned earlier, the development on Black Panther is still in its early stages, so don’t expect an official confirmation from EA anytime soon. But we could assume that the game will be released on all major platforms – PS5, Xbox Series S/X and Windows PC.
