‘Black Adam 2’ Isn’t Happening in DC, Says The Rock

First Henry Cavill, now Black Adam. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revealed on Twitter on Tuesday that Black Adam will not be included in DC’s upcoming movie slate, which was rocked by James Gunn and Peter Safran after the pair took over DC Studios in October.

“James Gunn and I hooked up, and black adam will not be in their first storytelling chapter,” Johnson wrote. “However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue to explore the most valuable ways to utilize Black Adam in future DC Multiverse Chapters.”

So Black Adam is out for now, but he may reappear years from now. Whether Johnson could still play the character in the future — he’s 50 now, and that imposing physique is getting harder to maintain over time — is another concern.

Black Adam’s departure, while temporary, reflects a significant realignment of the DC Cinematic Universe. After an appearance in Black Adam, Henry Cavill was set to return as Superman to take on Johnson’s antihero. But Cavil himself came out as Superman, something the actor revealed on Instagram Last week. Cavill had been playing Superman since Man of Steel in 2013.

“James and I have known each other for years and have always rooted for success,” Johnson wrote in his Tuesday post. “It’s no different now, and I will always support DC (and Marvel) to win.”

Gunn’s quote tweeted Johnson’s message, and tweeted equally kind words: “I love The Rock and I’m always excited to see what he and Seven Bucks do next. I look forward to collaborating soon.”

Black Adam hit theaters in October, grossing $391 million at the worldwide box office. The film received mixed reviews, with a 39% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It did much better with moviegoers, however, with an audience score of 89%.

“I will always come back to the fan reaction to Black Adam with immense gratitude, humility and love,” Johnson said.
