Claims five times more detail than other DNA tests for African ancestry and eight times for the British Isles
Most DNA kits promise to reveal a person’s ethnic origins via a cheek swab or saliva in a tube. They show you what makes you unique and help you learn where you really come from. You can also link them to historical records services to grow your family tree.
Once you submit your saliva sample, you wait a few weeks, then receive a visual report and even the ability to connect with distant relatives you didn’t know existed.
AncestryDNA Deals and Offers

AncestryDNA can estimate your origins in more than 350 regions around the world, the company claimsofferstwice the geographic detail of other DNA tests (competitor 23andme claims it can trace your DNA to 155 different regions around the world).
It comes from the people behind market-leading genealogy service Ancestry, packed withdigitizedhistorical records and the best way we’ve found to start your family tree.
AncestryDNA only tests your autosomes (chromosomes you share with relatives on both sides of your family), and is therefore less detailed about more distant and older ancestors – but is suitable for most family historians.
It also benefits from more than 10 million DNA results to make finding relatives more likely and improve the accuracy of its estimates.
AncestryDNA kits are normally priced at £79/US$99.
Ancestry is offering up to £20 off (up to $100 off in the US) on its family tree services when you choose the 6-month plans (which combine well with its DNA testing). You can also sign up for a 14-day free trial (UK) or an Ancestry free trial (US).

23andme Deals and Offers
23andme has 10 million test results. Somewhat confusingly, its main kit is called the Ancestry service.
Significantly, it tests three types of DNA – autosomes, yDNA, and mtDNA – where AncestryDNA only tests autosomes to determine more recent ethnic ancestry. Such tests lose their accuracy as the relationship grows further and further apart. This more in-depth DNA test makes 23andme more accurate further back in time and can even examine your Neanderthal heritage.
23andme recently added new populations in underrepresented regions in Asia and Africa, bringing its total number of regions tested to over 2,000.
The 23andme kit (called Ancestry + Traits), like Ancestry, is also usually priced at £79/US$99.
23andMe also has a Health + Ancestry Servicewhich examines not only your family tree, but also your genetic health risks (including BRCA1 and BRCA2, late-onset Alzheimer’s disease andParkinson), as well as the Carrier, Wellness and Traits reports. It usually costs £149/ $199 and is availableeither directly from 23andme orthrough Amazon. Trait reports allow users to uncover genetic links to certain behaviors and tastes, including fear of public speaking, a like/aversion to cilantro, and even the ability to match a musical pitch.

MyHeritage DNA Offers
Like Ancestry, MyHeritage DNA only tests your autosomes and trails market leaders with a relatively light 1.5 million recorded tests.
It’s usually priced at £79.
MyHeritage is also offering 50% off its 6-month or annual gift subscription. This offers unlimited family tree size and photo storage, access to a global collection of 12.6 billion historical records, and unlimited historical photo colorization and enhancement.

Living DNA offers
As with 23andme Living DNA (£99/USD99) look at your autosomes,yDNAfrom your father and mtDNA from your mother. By testing more than just autosomes, Living DNA can highlight centuries-old migration patterns, much like 23andme.
Its visual representations of your origins are super detailed. For example, it may illustrate 21 specific sub-regions of the UK that your DNA may come from. AncestryDNA has 13 regions.
Kits start at £49 / US$49, and youget free shipping if you order three or more kits. US shoppers can find discounts at Living DNA US.
Living DNA also powers its DNA testing for Find My Past (£79/US$89), a family tree building service much like Ancestry.
FamilyTreeDNA offers
FamilyTreeDNA gives you a percentage breakdown of your origins so you can see where each segment of DNA came from and helps you connect with your autosomal DNA relatives over the past five generations.
Its Chromosome Painter uses colors representing populations in your myOrigins results to paint segments of your genome.
AncientOrigins is a tool that reveals your deepest origins dating back to ancient times by comparing your DNA to DNA from archaeological dig sites across Europe.
Kits start at $79 for the Family Finder DNA Kit and ship worldwide. There are also separate paternal ($119) and maternal ($159) ancestry kits and a family ancestry + myDNA Wellness kit ($119) that offers over 30 health and wellness insights based on your DNA.
