Berbatov uses Jose Mourinho warning to answer Tottenham question
Tottenham’s trophy drought
Tottenham have, of course, gone some time without winning a trophy.
In fact, Spurs, despite somehow being dubbed one of the ‘top-six’ Premier League clubs, have not won a trophy since 2008.
When they did so, they beat Chelsea in the League Cup final by two goals to one.
Berbatov on Tottenham winning a trophy
One of the key figures in Tottenham’s 2007/08 League Cup run was Dimitar Berbatov, who scored the equaliser for Spurs in the final.
Now, Berbatov has been discussing Tottenham’s chance of winning a trophy this season.
The Lilywhites are already out of the Europa Conference League, which seemed like their best shot at silverware this term.
However, they are still going strong in the League Cup, with two semi-final meetings with Chelsea on the horizon.
Tottenham could also still win the FA Cup, though they have not begun their 2021/22 FA Cup campaign just yet.
And, if there is one man who could put an end to Spurs’ trophy drought, you would assume it would be Antonio Conte, who wins titles wherever he goes.
However, when asked recently if Tottenham can finally win some silverware this year under Conte, Berbatov was quick to point to Jose Mourinho and the fact he had won a trophy at every club he managed until he went to Spurs:
“In charge they now have Antonio Conte, who brings trophies wherever he goes, but that was the same for Mourinho not long ago.
“So, it shows that when you bring in a successful coach to Spurs, trophies aren’t always guaranteed.”
Berbatov did, however, add that his hopes are high for Tottenham:
“My hopes are high for Spurs and they are doing well in the league, they have a great chance to win a trophy again with the team this year, they have top players and Harry Kane will be desperate to lift a trophy with the club. Are they going to do it? We will see.”
