Batman Director Matt Reeves to Meet with James Gunn to Discuss BatVerse Future: Report

Batman director Matt Reeves has an upcoming meeting with new DC Studio co-directors James Gunn and Peter Safran. According to a new report, the filmmaker celebrated Cloverfield’s 15th anniversary and confirmed that his BatVerse will be developed alongside the new DC Universe. The conversation comes in the wake of the DC Comics brand ‘reset’, with new bosses still hatching a 10-year plan for an interwoven storyline akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The idea of ​​the meeting is to go over the long-range scenario plans of either party and make sure they don’t conflict with each other.

“We’re actually supposed to meet in the next few weeks because they want to talk to me about the overall plan and then they want to hear the BatVerse plan. We just get together to talk about all of this,” Reeves said, according to a Collider report. “Look, I’m glad to hear what they’re going to do. The BatVerse thing, as James said, and as Peter said, is kind of its own thing that they let us do. Reeves launched his The Batman universe last year with Robert Pattinson in the lead role, which was critically acclaimed and grossed $770.8 million (roughly Rs. 6,275 crore) at the global box office. It currently occupies the seventh position among the highest-grossing films of 2022.

When Gunn and Safran came on board as new leaders and made tough calls for a unified DC story, fans feared Reeves’ vision might be mixed up. The duo have already made some controversial decisions in light of future plans, including scrapping Wonder Woman 3 and canceling Henry Cavill’s return as Superman. Gunn also recently confirmed that he’s working on a script focusing on a younger version of Superman – not an origin story – although there’s no word on who will direct it. According to Variety, the pair are set to present their 10-year plan — covering movies, shoes, animation and video games — to Warner Bros. executives. Discovery, later this month. Those plans, for now, also don’t include a Black Adam sequel.

It’s possible that Gunn and Safran will adopt DC Comics’ Elseworlds strategy, which relies on alternate realities that operate separately from the main arc. “I dreamed up how I wanted it to go and that’s part of what I’m going to talk to them about in a few weeks,” Reeves added. “They’re going to talk to me about what they’re doing in their 10-year plan or certainly what’s going to happen in the near future as well so we can understand that we’re not doing it – it’s air traffic control – we’re not don’t’ I don’t want to crash into each other.

Reeves, who is currently writing The Batman sequel also confirmed that the movie will continue to focus on Bruce Wayne’s arc instead of his outlandish rogues gallery. “[…] often after you do the first, other Rogues Gallery characters come in, and they kind of take over, and then Batman takes a backseat character-wise or emotionally,” he explained.

Previous reports confirmed that the director was looking to expand on the villains via spin-off stories, with characters ranging from Scarecrow, Clayface, and Professor Pyg, as a way to create a larger universe. The first of these is the spin-off series Penguin directed by Colin Farrell, which will begin filming soon. Reeves pointed out that the series will be “closely tied” to the theatrical release, presumably functioning as a basis for the sequel to The Batman. “There’s actually a whole little fabric of things that we want to do, the way we do it with [the] Penguin and how it comes down to how it will lead to the sequel, and what that sequel is going to be,” Reeves said.
