Barcelona president reveals how Antoine Greizmann option to buy could become obligation

Griezmann departs Barcelona

In a deadline day scramble, Antoine Greizmann followed Lionel Messi out of the Barcelona exit door as the Catalan giants desperately attempted to balance their books.

Laporta revealed earlier in the window the extent of the issue, with the club spending 95% of their revenue on wages even before re-signing Messi, which would have taken it to 110%.

However, even with the exits of Miralem Pjanic, Antoine Griezmann and Emerson Royal this summer, they could not have registered Messi, Laporta telling Marca:

“Messi could not have stayed even with [Antoine] Griezmann‘s [departure] and with the salary reduction of the captains”

And one of the major beneficiaries of the summer problems that Barca have had are fellow Spanish side Atletico Madrid, who swooped in to take Griezmann back to the captial on a loan deal, two years after selling him to Barcelona for in excess of 100 million pounds.

Details of the move

There was some uncertainty over whether the move included an option or obligation to buy at the end of it, but Laporta clarified the situation last night, revealing that:

“Griezmann must play 50% of the matches he can take part in for the purchase option of Atletico to become mandatory”

It is unclear whether this is referencing playing from the start or if substitute appearances are also included, but it seems as though if they are smart, Atleti can keep Greizmann for a year before returning him to Barcelona, which would further play havoc with their finances.
