Barcelona midfielder set for return to Italy amid financial crisis.

Barcelona in financial ruin

Barcelona are in financial freefall, something not hidden by president Joan Laporta. The club were forced to release Lionel Messi, and according to Laporta, are set for losses of over 400 million euros.

Much of this comes down to the players on the books, who take up 95% of their revenue, even with the departure of their star player.

Expensive outlays on players such as Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho have not come good, and the economic depression brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic has deprived them of any gate revenue as a financial safety net.

As a result, the Spanish club are desperate for financial aid, but shifting ageing players on high wages in the current climate is proving difficult for many clubs across the continent.

Pjanic on his way out

However, it seems as though they may have managed to shift one of their higher earners, in the shape of Miralem Pjanic. The Bosnia and Herzegovina midfielder joined Barcelona from Juventus last season, in a swap deal for Arthur.

After just one season, however, it appears that Pjanic will return to Turin, this time on loan, as per Spanish outlet Pjanic is ready to take a 20% wage cut on his 8.5 million euro salary in order to ensure that the deal goes through and that Juventus do not fall foul of financial fair play.

It has been a difficult time for Pjanic, who made 19 La Liga appearances last campaign, but racked up just 619 minutes (the equivalent of less than 7 ninety-minute matches), and failed to contribute a goal or assist in any competition.

With his salary high, and Barcelona in freefall, the move may be best for all parties.
