Barcelona identify fresh Jordi Alba replacement option amid last-gasp January transfer push

Word stemming from the Spanish media on Thursday has pointed towards another potential solution to the left-back concerns of La Liga giants FC Barcelona.

The subject of reinforcements on the left side of Xavi Hernandez’s backline has of course taken its place centre stage in the headlines of late.

This comes amid a concerning stretch of form on the part of current first-choice Jordi Alba, culminating in the widespread agreement that additions to Xavi Hernandez’s ranks are a must ahead of the 2nd half of the campaign.

Initially, Ajax star Nicolas Taglifaco was viewed as the most realistic target on the part of the Blaugrana, with the Argentine understood to be keen on the prospect of a move to the Camp Nou.

But, on Thursday, an alternative option has been mooted.

As per a report from Spanish outlet Diario Sport, Xavi and co. have turned their attentions towards Benfica standout Grimaldo.

This comes with the Portuguese powerhouse ready to open negotiations over a potential loan deal featuring an obligation to buy in the summer.

It is added that relations between the two clubs are ‘good’, meaning the possibility of players being included in an exchange-of-sorts cannot be ruled out.

For those not aware, Grimaldo is actually a graduate of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, having been on the books of the Catalans from 2008 to 2016, before eventually departing for a hitherto successful stint with Benfica.

Traore incoming

Should Barca manage to push a deal for Grimaldo over the line before the transfer window slams shut, it will likely mark the 2nd return of a former La Masia graduate to the club over the days ahead.

This comes with the Blaugrana also primed to bring Wolverhampton Wanderers wide-man Adama Traore in, on loan with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer.

As confirmed by a host of reliable sources, Traore is expected in Catalunya on Friday, ahead of undergoing his medical and putting pen to paper on terms with Xavi’s troops.
