Barcelona duo Depay & De Jong lead charge against Montenegro; Depay reaches goal milestone

Depay brace earns Dutch win; achieves goal milestone

Many Premier League fans will remember Memphis Depay for being cocky in his youthful exuberance which led to a disappointing spell at Manchester United. But the Barcelona forward is a long way removed from his younger years and the Dutch international has now reached hallowed ground for his country after scoring a brace in Oranje‘s 4-0 thrashing of Montenegro in World Cup qualifying.

Depay’s brace on either side of half-time saw the Barcelona forward reach 30-goals in his international career for the Netherlands, putting him just one strike away from cracking the top-ten all-time goalscoring list.

In what has been a superb calendar 2021 for Depay that now has him on 25-goals and 13-assists in a combined 37-matches for club and country, his overall form is precisely the reason why Barcelona thought it prudent to bring in the PSV Eindhoven academy graduate as part of their plans to move forward on the pitch.

Just one goal shy of drawing level with midfield maestro Wesley Sneijder on 31-goals, Depay now has not only the top ten in his sights but even greater achievement as no one ahead of him on the list is active. Still just 27 and entering his prime, he should be in line to climb up a veritable who’s who of Dutch football, including Johan Cruijff & Abe Lenstra (33), Faas Wilkes & Ruud van Nistelrooij (35), and Dennis Bergkamp & Arjen Robben (37).

De Jong shines; a key piece in the future of Barcelona

Despite links with a move for RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo materializing in January, Barcelona can still call upon Ajax youth product Frenkie de Jong as a vital piece for the club’s fortunes moving forward.

De Jong was at his best tonight once again for his country, completing 93% of his passes, maintaining the third-highest amount of possession, completing five dribbles, while being the ever-present focal point.

His importance to the national team, and at Ajax during his time in Amsterdam, has already translated well to Barcelona.

Thus far this season, De Jong has been the engine that drives the train at the Camp Nou and comes into the international break on scintillating form for Barcelona.

Is there a better central midfielder in the world at the minute? You would certainly struggle to find one.
