Bacteria risk prompts recall of 145,000 boxes of infant formula

Thousands of boxes of infant formula have been voluntarily recalled by manufacturer Reckitt, the US Food and Drug Administration announced on Monday. The recall involves 145,000 cans of Enfamil Prosobee 12.9 oz. Simply plant-based infant formulas that may have been contaminated with Cronobacter sakazakii. It’s the same bacteria that shut down an infant formula factory in Michigan, fueling an infant formula shortage last year.

Monday’s recall covers formulas with an expiration date of March 1, 2024, Reckitt said. The formula has been shipped across the United States, including Puerto Rico and Guam. The recalled boxes have lot numbers ZL2HZF and ZL2HZZ printed on the bottom.

“All products distributed have undergone extensive testing and tested negative for bacteria,” Reckitt noted. No illnesses have been reported and none of the company’s other products are affected.
