Avatar: The Way of Water is now the biggest movie of the year. After only 21 days since its theatrical release, the highly anticipated sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar has now collected $1.516 billion (roughly Rs. 12,505 crore) at the global box office, overtaking Top Gun: Maverick for the top spot. of 2022. The Tom Cruise-led action deal is worth $1.4 billion (about Rs. 11,548 crore). According to the latest figures, Avatar 2 has collected $1.05 billion (approximately Rs. 8,666 crore) from markets outside of the United States, which has helped blaze a trail as number one. 10 highest-grossing movies of all time. According to Deadline, China retains its top market position in the non-US pack, raking in $168.6 million (about Rs. 1,392 crore). The film’s performance in the country is a huge boost, given that the region has notoriously banned several theatrical screenings in Hollywood. Close behind China is France, which attracted $96.1 million (about Rs 793 crore), surpassing Korea’s collection of $78.2 million (about Rs 645 crore) this week. The two regions have been neck and neck since the release in terms of ticket sales, although now the gap has widened in favor of France. Germany comes in fourth, slightly below Korea’s figures at $76.5 million (roughly Rs. 631 crore), while India was left out of the top 5. The UK takes that spot, paying $60 $.9 million (about Rs. 503 crore).

Avatar: The Way of Water has continued to exceed expectations since its release, even becoming the fastest to join the billion dollar club this year – in 14 days. His contest, Top Gun: Maverick, on the other hand, reached that milestone after 31 days since its theatrical debut. In third place is Jurassic World Dominion, led by Chris Pratt, which has pulled in $1.003 billion (approximately Rs. 8,280 crore) in over three months. While an achievement on such a scale is generally considered impressive, Avatar 2 still needs to earn around $2 billion (roughly Rs. 16,511 crore) to break even. Director Cameron had earlier suggested that this sequel needed to become the “third or fourth highest-grossing film in history” to achieve that goal. Given that there’s no major Hollywood competition until Ant-Man and the Wasp – the next Marvel movie – hits theaters in February, the milestone is still close at hand.

Elsewhere, Cameron teased minor plot details for Avatar 3, saying it would introduce what he calls “Ash People”, representing the culture of fire. “I want to show the Na’vi from another angle because so far I’ve only shown their good sides,” he told French publication 20 Minutes (via GamesRadar). “In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3 we will do the opposite. We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters. Reports last month also revealed that the director had already shot footage for Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 to avoid “the Stranger Things effect” – avoiding signs of aging in the cast.

Avatar: The Way of Water is now in theaters worldwide. In India, Avatar 2 is available in English, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu.
