Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings opens up on mental health struggles due to Euro 2020

Tyrone Mings’ Euro 2020

Tyrone Mings was named as one of the 26-man squad taken to Euro 2020 by Gareth Southgate after a stellar campaign with Aston Villa.

In all honesty, few likely saw the defender as one of England’s main centre-backs this summer, with Harry Maguire and John Stones instead expected to form the pairing in front of Jordan Pickford.

However, Maguire was injured at the back end of 2020/21 and whilst he was taken to the tournament, he was not fit enough to start the first few games.

This led to Mings being handed a starting berth next to Stones in England’s opening two group ties vs Croatia and Scotland.

And, to his credit, Mings was a cool, composed presence at the back, playing a key role in England keeping two clean sheets.

Mings’ mental health struggles

Maguire then took the reins at Stones’ partner from the 3rd group game to the final, but Mings’ efforts should still be appreciated.

The player himself has since opened up on the mental health struggles he faced ahead of and during Euro 2020, stating that:

‘I did have a tough time in the lead-up to the opening game against Croatia.

‘I think I’m a lot more hardened to outside influences now, but my mental health did plummet. And I have no shame in admitting that because there were so many unknowns about me going to that game.

‘I was probably the only name on the team sheet that people thought, ‘not sure about him’. And that was something I had to overcome.

‘So I did a lot of work on that with my psychologist. I was given a lot of coping mechanisms – whether it was breathing, meditation, or just learning how to bring yourself into the present moment. To stop letting your subconscious take over.

‘It was hard. I didn’t really sleep very well before that first game.’

Mings also revealed a text he got from Rio Ferdinand following the tournament after the former defender had previously picked him out as a weak point vs Croatia:

‘Rio DM’d me after the tournament. He’d said I was the weak link, and that Croatia should be targeting me.

‘He messaged me saying something like,’Top-class response – matched your performances on the pitch.’ What a lovely guy.

‘It’s just great that we are playing in a time now when you can speak about mental health, and how you are feeling.’
