Aston Villa’s final pre-season friendly cancelled due to COVID fears

Sevilla friendly off

Sevilla have taken to their official Twitter account to announce that their friendly against Aston Villa has been cancelled.

In a club statement, the Spanish club wrote:

Sevilla FC have cancelled their trip to Birmingham and tomorrow’s friendly against Aston Villa at Villa Park for reasons relating to COVID-19. Sevilla FC will not play any more friendlies before La Liga’s imminent start on 15 August against Rayo Vallecano at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.

This means that, at present, new signings Danny Ings and Leon Bailey will not feature for Aston Villa ahead of their Premier League opening fixture against newly-promoted Watford, which will be prove a test for the club immediately in the aftermath of selling their talisman Jack Grealish.

Aston Villa far from the first club hit

Aston Villa are certainly not the first team to have been affected by Covid in pre-season, with several Premier League clubs having to call off games at short notice. Arsenal cancelled their Florida tour, while Manchester United’s game against Preston North End was also cancelled.

With the Premier League season just days away, it will be fascinating to see how the competition deals with the seemingly rising Coronavirus cases among squads. For Aston Villa, however, the problem lies in their pre-season preparation.
