Aston Villa trim the squad as Trezeguet ships out on loan to Turkish outfit Istanbul Basaksehir

Aston Villa has completed the final stages of the squad being trimmed down at Villa Park after Egyptian international winger Trézéguet departs for Turkey on loan for the rest of the season with Istanbul Başakşehir.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano tweeted earlier this morning that the Villains winger had already completed his medical with the Turkish club while having completed his medical earlier in the morning before officially completing a loan move until the end of the 2021-22 season.

But according to boss Steven Gerrard, this was a move that Trézéguet needed given his limited minutes at Aston Villa in the wake of recovering from serious injury: “I think there will be in an announcement on what’s next for Trézéguet. He’ll go out on loan and play, I think that’s the right thing for him. He’s been out for seven months with a career-threatening injury, he’s back in a good place so he needs to go and play.” Note: quotes via Ben Dinnery

Aston Villa to rely on a key core for the remainder of the season

With both Anwar El Ghazi and Trézéguet out the door at Villa Park during the January window, Steven Gerrard will rely on a cadre of attacking players two-deep in each position for the remainder of the season, but that is no bad thing.

Now able to boast Brazilian international Philippe Coutinho among the first-team ranks, Villa is able to rely on quality both in their starting XI as well as their secondary options across the forward line in a season that is bereft of European competition and no cup football left on the calendar.

Six players across three positions in the forward line should be more than enough for Gerrard to utilize, especially the level of talent he has at his disposal despite currently sitting just outside of the top half of the table.

Emi Buendía, Bertrand Traoré, and Leon Bailey is a highly credible trio added to Coutinho, not to mention a center-forward pair of Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings to select from.

On paper, at the very least, Aston Villa certainly has an attack that is capable of shooting them into the top half while being capable of kicking on next season in the hopes of securing some semblance of European football.
