Ashley Young rejects Newcastle as Magpies search for further January signings

Newcastle United’s squad rebuild under Eddie Howe has hit another snag after Aston Villa veteran defender Ashley Young is the latest to snub interest from the St. James’ Park outfit.

The report comes from The Mirror’s James Nursey stating that despite Young only rejoining Villa on a one-year deal that is set to end at the conclusion of the 2021-22 Premier League campaign, he currently does not view a move to Newcastle as viable.

Steven Gerrard’s outfit recently sealed a deal for French international left-back Lucas Digne which has direct implications for Young’s position in the squad as he is now unquestionably viewed as a versatile jack of all trades under Gerrard rather than a first-choice option when everyone is fit and available.

Presumably, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe could very well rely on Young in an increased role at St. James’ Park given his current options on Tyneside. The likes of Jamal Lewis, Paul Dummett, and Matt Ritchie could all find themselves behind Young in the pecking order should a deal somehow come to fruition.

Newcastle continue to canvas the January market

Even though Newcastle could well miss out on Ashley Young, the club persist in their attempts to canvas the January market with the view of adding a few more to the squad before the window slams shut.

The club has recently targetted Bayer Leverkusen’s Mitchel Bakker and is also said to be weighing up the possibility of making a move for on-loan Chelsea starlet Armando Broja.

Both Bakker and Broja fit a different profile than winter additions Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier that have already both arrived and featured for the Magpies, signaling the club’s intent to not only look at an immediate increase in quality across the team but also with a view to planning for the future.

That profile can also be applied to Olympique Lyonnais star midfielder Bruno Guimarães who Newcastle is said to be closing in on for a shock transfer given far bigger clubs keeping tabs on the Brazilian international.

Should deals for all three manage to get over the line before the calendar changes to 1 February, Newcastle will have splashed an impressive £120million across five signings that unquestionably would give the club a very good chance of avoiding the drop.
