As latest defender rejection confirmed, Newcastle ready contract renewal for another
A pair of updates surrounding the efforts of Premier League outfit Newcastle United to reinforce the heart of the club’s backline have come to the fore on Monday.
The first surrounds an offer laid out by the St. James’ Park brass to a soon-to-be free agent defender.
The stopper in question? Niklas Sule.
Speaking in an interview with Kerry Hau of German outlet Sport1 earlier today, Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus provided an insight into the chain of events which ultimately led Sule to take the decision to depart Bavaria.
As confirmed earlier this month, the 26-year-old, to the surprise of many, has opted to link up with Bayern’s Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund following the expiration of his contract in the summer.
And Matthaus has revealed that this comes with Sule having been left to feel ‘left out in the cold’ by those in a position of power at the Allianz Arena.
“He didn’t feel supported by FC Bayern. He was left out in the cold”, the German icon explained.
Interestingly, from here, Matthaus also went on to confirm that, before agreeing to terms with Dortmund, Sule also rejected a pair of lucrative proposals from the Premier League.
One such offer came by way of the aforementioned Newcastle, where the stopper ‘could have earned a lot’ more money:

Newcastle’s failure to land Sule, though, does not appear to have brought an end to the efforts of the newly-minted Magpies to strengthen their backline.
This comes with the hierarchy at St. James’ now ready to open discussions with a current member of Eddie Howe’s squad – in the form of Fabian Schar – over the terms of a new contract.
As per a report from transfer journalist Ekrem Konur, amid interest on the part of Premier League clubs in his signature, Newcastle ‘plan’ to imminently extend Schar’s deal by another two years:
