Cristiano Ronaldo’s name has inevitably taken centre stage in the online chatter this afternoon, as Manchester United face off with Newcastle.

CR7 at the double

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are currently locked in action at Old Trafford.

In the club’s first outing on the back of the international break, the Red Devils welcomed Steve Bruce and co. to Manchester, aiming to build on a solid start to the campaign.

After Tottenham fell to a surprise defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace this afternoon, United were aware that a 3-point haul of their own would guide them clear of the Lilywhites to the summit of the English top-flight.

And, as things stand on Saturday, this is precisely what the hosts are headed towards.

Almost as if written in the stars, Cristiano Ronaldo, on his 2nd debut for the club, has stolen the show for United, courtesy of a brace.

The Portuguese opened the game’s scoring on the stroke of the interval, slotting home from close range after Freddie Woodman spilled Mason Greenwood’s effort from the edge of the area.

Then, after Javier Manquillo threw a spanner in the works with an equaliser early in the 2nd-half, Ronaldo was back at it again, netting from Luke Shaw’s fine through ball to hand the advantage back to the hosts.

Elite company

And, as outlined above, such endeavours have since inevitably seen CR7 grab the headlines across social media.

First, it was revealed that the 36-year-old has become the 3rd oldest player ever to score for Manchester United in the Premier League, after only Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes:

Not only that, but, in a touching moment, on the back of his opener this afternoon, Ronaldo’s mother was spotted weeping tears of joy in the Old Trafford stands:
