Arsene Wenger singles surprise Man United star out for praise after Atalanta comeback

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has piqued attentions amongst the Manchester United fanbase, on the back of the club’s showdown with Atalanta.

CR7 strikes late

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were of course back in action on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils welcomed Serie A outfit Atalanta to Old Trafford, eyeing a much-needed victory in the club’s third Champions League group stage outing of the campaign.

And, when all was said and done in Manchester, make it two wins on the trot on the continent is precisely what United managed.

Another Old Trafford late show was ultimately required, after Atalanta surged into a two-goal lead courtesy of finishes from Mario Pasalic and Merih Demiral.

In turn, after Harry Maguire added to Marcus Rashford’s 2nd in two games fifteen minutes from time, the stage was set for ‘Mr. Champions League’ to step up.

A whipped Luke Shaw delivery from the left was met in trademark fashion by Cristiano Ronaldo just beyond the 80th-minute, completing the turnaround, and sealing all three points in the process.

‘Personally highlight…’

In turn, in the near-24 hours since the action came to a close at the Theatre of Dreams, it has come as little surprise to see the name of that man Ronaldo steal the majority of the headlines.

As outlined above, though, speaking post-match, one highly-respected voice in the game – in the form of Arsene Wenger – was in fact keen to single another member of Solskjaer’s squad out for special praise.

Speaking as part of his analysis role with beIN Sports, ex-Arsenal boss Wenger highlighted the 2nd-half efforts of the oft-maligned Fred as key to United’s comeback triumph, explaining:

‘I would personally highlight the second half for Fred.’

‘Fred saved a few crosses in the box, defensively outstanding and he worked unbelievably hard in the second half.’
