Reiss Nelson joins Feyenoord on loan

Nelson has long been on the outside looking in at Arsenal since his disappointing loan period at Hoffenheim back in 2018/19, and is now firmly down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta.

Another loan period will hopefully do a world of good for the 21-year-old England youth international, who has long been touted as one of the best products to come through the academy set up in his generation including being ahead of the likes of Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka.

At current, Nelson is behind his former academy teammates, as well as Nicolas Pépé, new signing Martin Ødegaard, and Gabriel Martinelli for the attacking births behind central strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, Folarin Balogun, and Eddie Nketiah.

What the future holds at Arsenal

In truth, no one knows what the next step for Nelson will be. Much of that will certainly come down to his loan spell at the De Kuip Stadium under headmaster Arne Slot.

But Nelson will be made to fight for his place while he is at De club aan de Maas, with competition coming directly from summer signing Alireza Jahanbakhsh and 22-year-old Colombian international Luis Sinisterra.

His spell at Hoffenheim started brightly when he was under Julian Nagelsmann during the 2018/19 campaign, but his star quickly fizzled out for a combination of reasons including injury and poor adaptation to life abroad.

Arsenal has seen fit to extend his contract till 2023 before leaving for Feyenoord, however, in a move that both protects his value if they choose to sell him next summer but also affords them the latitude to revisit his status at the club should he take his chance this term.
