Arsenal & Tottenham eye move for Lesley Ugochukwu

Arsenal and Tottenham are interested in Lesley Ugochukwu, according to reports stemming from France.

As per Goal citing French outlet L’Equipe, Arsenal and Tottenham are plotting a move for Ugochukwu, with it added that the Premier League sides have been impressed by the Rennes star and are keeping an eye on him.

No potential transfer fee is mentioned in the report, but given Ugochukwu is still young and under contract with his current side, Rennes, until 2024, he is unlikely to come cheap.

Who is Lesley Ugochukwu?

Lesley Ugochukwu is an 18-year-old defensive midfielder who has spent his entire career at Rennes.

The midfielder was born in the city and worked his way up the club’s youth ranks before earning his senior debut last season.

All told, Ugochukwu has now featured 20 times for Rennes’ senior side, with 17 of those outings coming in the current campaign.

Despite his tender years, the Rennes-native is already terrorizing midfields in Ligue 1, with his 6 ft 2 presence and dominating style seeing him earn comparisons with Arsenal legend, Patrick Vieira.

Despite Ugochukwu’s potential, though, should he be the midfielder Arsenal are looking at right now?

It is obvious that the Gunners need a new central midfielder in the summer, but given they already have one inexperienced talent in the form of Albert Sambi Lokonga, perhaps they should instead be looking to bring in an older player who they could rely on regular basis.

Arsenal will be competing in Europe next season and having two back up central midfielders with very little experience is probably not the best idea if Arteta is looking to compete on four fronts.
