But despite him being on the losing side against Argentina, Arsenal see the Juventus star – who has played 16 games for the Serie A side this campaign – as the perfect player to boost their midfield.

According to Italian outlet Repubblica, the Gunners are keen to sign him in January in their bid to win the title this year.

The 27-year-old’s proposed transfer to Manchester United this summer collapsed due to personal terms.

But Juventus may now be willing to sell him for a reduced fee to avoid losing him for nothing in the summer at the end of his contract.

Arteta will be eager to boost his options in midfield to avoid of the injury crisis last term, giving cover for Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka.

And Rabiot himself said he’d want to play in England earlier this month.

“Premier League attracts me,” Rabiot said. “I’ve always said I’d like to play there — will it be at the end of my contract at Juve? I don’t know.

“I don’t have favourite team in England, no team where I’d necessarily like to play.”

Arsenal get their season Premier League season back underway against West Ham at the Emirates on Boxing Day, with Arteta hoping to have all his World Cup stars back at his disposal – apart from the injured Gabriel Jesus.
