Arsenal star handed England call up as four players fail to report for international duty

Four players fail to report for international duty

Marcus Rashford is among four players to fail to report for England duty this afternoon.

The Three Lions are due to take on Albania and San Marino in the final two World Cup qualifiers, knowing that four points from a possible six would be enough to qualify them for the World Cup in Qatar next November.

However, Gareth Southgate has been hit by a swathe of absentees. Rashford has pulled out of the squad as he looks to recover from shoulder surgery and illness, that has prevented him from completing 90 minutes yet this season.

Meanwhile, there are three further issues, with a statement reading::

Rashford will remain with Manchester United in order to concentrate on regaining full fitness while Ward-Prowse is ruled out of the forthcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers through illness.

Mount’s arrival has been delayed due to recent dental surgery and he will continue to be monitored in the coming days, as will Shaw who is currently following concussion protocol at his club.

Emile Smith Rowe gains England call up

One major beneficiary of the news however, was Arsenal starlet Emile Smith Rowe. Just over 24 hours after scoring the decisive goal for his club against Watford, he has received his first senior call up to the England senior squad, just under a year on from his breakthrough against Chelsea on boxing day of 2020.

It remains to be seen just how much playing time he actually gets, with clubmate Bukayo Saka alongside Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling and others ahead of him in the pecking order. Nonetheless, it is a just reward for the form he has shown so far this season.
