Torreira’s Arsenal stint

Lucas Torreira joined Arsenal from Italian outfit Sampdoria in the summer of 2018 and impressed initially. The diminutive Uruguayan appeared in 34 of Arsenal’s 38 Premier League games, providing one goal and one assist as the Gunners finished in 5th place. His sole goal came against Tottenham in a 4-2 derby win, instantly writing his name into Arsenal fans’ hearts.

However, since that season, Torreira has struggled with his football. Initially employed in midfield by Mikel Arteta, the Uruguayan was discarded after Christmas, completing 90 minutes just 3 times between then and the end of the season.

The result of this, which stemmed in part from a change of system, was that the 25-year-old was loaned out to Atletico Madrid for the 2020-21 campaign, perhaps with the idea that he could provide a replacement for Arsenal-bound Thomas Partey.

Like at Arsenal, though, Torreira found game time hard to come by in the Spanish capital, making just three starts for Atleti and often restricted to short cameos off of the substitutes bench.

Now back with the Gunners, he is seemingly set for a move in the last days of the transfer window.

Three options emerge

To this end, it seems as though three options are currently present to Torreira. As per the reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the first of these is German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, who have offered to take the 25 year old to Germany on a permanent basis.

However, as per the same source, Torreira would prefer a move back to Serie A, where he joined the Gunners from. Fortunately, two clubs in the Italian top flight seem keen on his signature. As per Di Marzio, both Fiorentina and Lazio are hoping to take Torreira back to Italy this summer, although whether on loan or permanently is unclear.

In Lazio’s case, any addition would hinge on the potential sale of Joaquin Correa to Inter Milan, a deal that seems to be progressing slowly at present.

Were Arsenal to shift the wantaway midfield, they would be able to continue their summer overhaul, which has so far seen them add five players to their squad.
