Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka tests positive for Covid-19

Xhaka reportedly tests positive for Covid-19

Arsenal have been plagued by Covid-19 in their camp across the opening three games of the season, with Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ben White and Willian all missing from the first-team squad due to the virus.

Their bad luck has continued into the international break too, with Granit Xhaka the latest player from the Gunners to test positive for the virus.

The positive test means that Xhaka will sit out of Switzerland’s international games in the next week, which include home games to Greece and Italy as well as a trip to Northern Ireland.

As per news outlet SRF:

“Xhaka was diagnosed with symptoms on the morning of the game and was immediately isolated in his room. A quick test turned out negative, but the subsequent PCR test carried out to be on the safe side showed a positive result in the evening.”

What does it mean for Arsenal?

In short, it means little for Arsenal. Xhaka was sent off in Arsenal’s last Premier League fixture, against Manchester City, and will therefore miss their next three fixtures.

As such, Xhaka will have to sit out games against Norwich, Burnley and AFC Wimbledon, meaning that he may not play a competitive football match again until the north London derby, which would see him almost a month without a game.

Arsenal currently have Sambi Lokonga, Thomas Partey and Mohammed Elneny as options in central midfield, and it is likely the Swiss side, of whom he is captain, that will miss him most.

We wish Granit all the best in his recovery.
