Arsenal: Maddison no longer a priority as Aouar links reemerge

A fresh insight into the transfer plans of Premier League outfit Arsenal has, on Thursday afternoon, been forthcoming online.

Arteta eyeing reinforcements

The subject of the attacking midfield spot at the Emirates has of course taken centre stage in the media chatter on the back of the 2020/21 campaign coming to a close.

This comes with Arsenal having struggled for central creativity throughout much of a disappointing season.

The eventual emergence of Emile Smith Rowe proved a huge plus, whilst Martin Odegaard did a solid if unspectacular job following his loan arrival during the January window.

Mikel Arteta, however, is evidently of the opinion that his side remains in need of another spark.

This, in turn, led the board in North London to sanction a big-money swoop for Norwich City star Emi Buendia early in the summer. In the end, though, Arsenal were somewhat surprisingly beaten to the Argentine’s signature by Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Aouar & Odegaard eyed

If the latest word doing the rounds in the media is anything to go by, however, then the Gunners’ search for creative reinforcements remains very much alive.

The name chiefly tipped for an Emirates switch of late has of course come in the form of Leicester City standout James Maddison.

However, amid the Foxes’ unwavering stance that their midfield star will not be allowed to depart unless a big-money bid is tabled, Arsenal now appear to have turned their attentions elsewhere.

As per a report from the reliable James McNicholas of The Athletic, despite having admirers at the Emirates, Maddison ‘is not someone Arsenal are seriously pursuing at this time’.

Instead, the aforementioned Odegaard, of course familiar to Mikel Arteta and co., has reemerged as the Gunners’ no.1 summer target.

Arsenal are said to have made clear that they are willing to stump up the cash required to lure the Norwegian back to the club, albeit in the knowledge that, if a move is to come to fruition, Odegaard himself will likely need to force Real Madrid’s hand.

Last up in The Athletic’s update, meanwhile, is confirmation that the name of Houssem Aouar, so long tipped for a North London switch, is now back on the agenda at Arsenal.

The Frenchman, who at one point last summer looked a near cert to swap his home country for England, is viewed as a potential bargain addition over the coming weeks, at just €25 million.

The Gunners, though, could even launch an audacious loan swoop, amid lingering ‘concerns’ over Aouar’s profile.
