Arsenal-linked Andre Onana could leave Ajax for free next year, confirms Marc Overmars

Arsenal linked with Onana

Earlier in the summer, Arsenal would see themselves linked with goalkeeper, Andre Onana.

The Ajax star has been plying his trade in the Dutch capital since his move from FC Barcelona in January of 2015.

Onana has since featured 204 times for Ajax’s senior side, keeping 83 clean sheets and playing key roles in their domestic and European success, with Ajax of course reaching the semi-final of the Champions League in 2018/19.

Arsenal would be credited with an interest in Onana back in June:

However, at the time, Onana was suspended for 12 months by UEFA after he tested positive for Furosemide following an out-of-competition test.

Onana has since had said ban reduced to nine months, meaning he will be able to play again in early November. But it was easy to see why Arsenal did not sign him this summer, instead bringing in Aaron Ramsdale.

Onana to leave Ajax for free?

However, though Arsenal now have Ramsdale and Bernd Leno competing for the no.1 spot, they may need to once again dip into the market for a keeper next summer.

This comes with reports suggesting that Leno, who has endured a rough patch of form of late, could leave the club next summer.

If this were to happen, it appears as though Arsenal could pick up Onana on a free next year.

The keeper currently has less than 12 months left on his Ajax deal – meaning he can sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs as early as January.

And, Ajax’s director of football Marc Overmars has recently suggested that Onana could leave for free next year:

When asked about the 25-year-old’s contract potentially being extended, the former Arsenal winger told Ajax TV [as cited by]:

“You never know in football, but the way I see it now, I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

“It is possible that he will leave in the winter, but that must yield a decent amount. It must go both ways. If the amount is not sufficient, then [he will leave] in July for nothing.”
