Arsenal forward “expected” to depart in January transfer window

Arsenal’s striking issues

Arsenal’s transfer business next season seems to be strongly predicated on the need for a striker.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has struggled in front of goal so far this season, with his latest high-profile miss against Newcastle United at the weekend summing up his difficulties at present.

Meanwhile, both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah, Arsenal’s other two senior strikers, are out of contract in the summer, with Nketiah turning down the latest contract offer in search of first-team football. Gabriel Martinelli can be utilised through the middle, but is a winger by trade, although he provided a striker’s finish at the weekend.

This leaves only Folarin Balogun able to operate through the middle, and despite continuing to impress at underage level, he has made just one senior Premier League appearance, suggesting that perhaps he is not ready to assume the Aubameyang mantle just yet.

Balogun set to leave on loan

Balogun has proved far too good for the U23 so far this season, netting 14 goals in 10 PL2 games, as well as grabbing 4 assists.

As a result, Arsenal are thought to be keen to find him a loan move come January. As per the London Evening Standard:

“He is expected to go out on loan when the January transfer window opens”, while “Several Championship clubs are keen on loaning Balogun for six months, with Middlesbrough pushing hard.”

A loan move for Balogun would likely keep Nketiah at the club until he departs for free in the Summer, with Alex Lacazette the only other striking option when Aubameyang departs for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Is Balogun’s development worth missing out on a fee for Nketiah?
