Arsenal fans flag up major selection mistake as unbeaten streak comes to end in Liverpool drubbing
The Arsenal faithful have taken to social media in their numbers this evening, to highlight a key selection mistake as having proven detrimental in their side’s defeat at the hands of Liverpool.
Reds run riot
Mikel Arteta of course led his side back into action a short time ago.
In their first outing post-international break, the Gunners made the trip to Anfield, keen to build on an 11-game unbeaten streak across all competitions.
To say that, when all was said and done, Arsenal were brought firmly back down to earth, though, would be something of an understatement.
Though the visitors, in their defence, did not perform all that badly, they were simply blown away by the attacking might of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
A wonderful display on the part of the Reds ultimately played out into a 4-0 drubbing, courtesy of strikes from all of Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Takumi Minamino.
Oh so easy… 🔴

Left-back dilemma
Liverpool, in turn, have climbed back into 2nd in the Premier League table, four points adrift of table-topping Chelsea.
At Arsenal, though, it appears very much back to the drawing board.
Though the value of months of positive work cannot be erased by one result, the Gunners were, in truth, provided with a firm reminder of just how far adrift of England’s top, top clubs they remain this evening.
But, as alluded to above, despite their side simply being outclassed by superior opposition at Anfield, the Arsenal faithful have nevertheless been keen to flag up one selection decision post-match, identified as having proven detrimental to their side’s chances of securing an unlikely result.
The call in question? Nuno Tavares’ inclusion over Kieran Tierney.
Portuguese stopper Tavares has of course thoroughly impressed of late, after being handed a consistent string of appearances amid the injury absence of first-choice left-back Tierney.
In turn, despite the latter having been fit enough to feature from the off on Merseyside, Mikel Arteta nevertheless opted to stick with the in-form, and inexperienced Tavares, giving rise to something of a backlash across social media:
How is Tavares still on the pitch when we have Tierney on the bench

Honestly can’t believe Tavares started ahead of Tierney today. Madness.

So Tierney is going to be back in the starting line up next week. Tavares has had an absolute mare today – at some fault for each goal today 😅

Picking Tavares over Tierney has back fired big time, that second goal was so costly, opened the floodgates.

I told peeps nothing has changed. In a game like this how Tierney hasn’t played is beyond me. Tavares been ruined. Same old same old.

I never want to see Tavares > Tierney takes again man…

Not starting Kieran Tierney was very naive

Tierney back in the starting XI asap. And may God smite me if I ever fix my lips to promote Tavares as starting LB #LIVARS pic.twitter.com/p9a1DAgQyS

Tavares and Lokonga caused this defeat can’t wait for Xhaka and Tierney to be fit again

I like Tavares but that’s 2 goals he’s at fault for. Why didn’t Tierney start? He’s been fully fit smashing it for Scotland last weekend.
