The Three Lions go into the fixtures knowing that they need to take four points from a possible six in order to ensure that they win the Group, with Poland waiting should they slip up.

This comes after Southgate’s side dropped points against Poland and also at home to Hungary, who held the English to a 1-1 draw in a game marred by crowd trouble.

In San Marino, they take on a side that has not picked up a point, and only scored one goal, in their qualification campaign, which in itself is a success given that they rank among the lowest UEFA sides.

Albania may be a tougher prospect, but Southgate and co. will surely be confident of qualifying this international break.

Eyes on Emile

One man who is almost certainly deserving of an England call-up is Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe, who has been in brilliant form for the Gunners since the last international break.

Gareth Southgate revealed that Smith Rowe was close to a call up last time round, and since then he has provided 2 goals and 1 assist in three Premier League games.

Therefore, it was somewhat surprising to see that Smith Rowe was not among those selected by Gareth Southgate for the upcoming games once again. Nor was their space for the impressive Connor Gallagher, although the out of form Harry Maguire and Raheem Sterling kept their places.

Clearly, Southgate values the experience that the pair bring, for two games in which he must get results. For those keen to see youth blossom however, it is a bitter pill to swallow.
