Apple Watch has reportedly received a patent for color-changing watch straps. The color of the watch strap could be adjusted via an app, the report said. Apple is said to be working on having the watch strap change color on its own depending on the wearer’s outfit. The color changing feature could also be used to send notifications to users. The patent suggests that the company will use electrochromic elements on the watch band, capable of changing color and opacity.

The patent spotted by Patently Apple, will allow Apple to work on watch straps capable of adjusting colors. This will allow users to customize their watch straps according to their choice and style. The patent states that the tapes will carry electrochromic elements, which can adjust the color and opacity of the tape when a small electric current is supplied.

Looking at the report, the watch band would have a three band design and the color of each band would be independently adjustable. It is reported to display both solid patterns and striped patterns. The patent also explained that the watch straps would provide adjustable color control and display multiple colors and color combinations without removing or swapping the watch strap.

Users could control, select and/or adjust one or more colors of the watchband via a control system. Color selections can be made and adjusted through the Apple Watch app, the report says.

Additionally, the patent also notes that the band would also be able to display “icons, shapes, and text” and will change color to notify users of notifications. Notably, users can already change the color of their watch straps by physically changing the strap, but the new capability will remove the need to purchase multiple straps.

Meanwhile, Apple has taken an important step in developing blood sugar monitoring technology that could make its way to a future Apple Watch model. The technology would eliminate the need for a needle to take a blood sample of any kind to detect a user’s blood sugar.
