‘Announce Messi’: Robin van Persie responds to Man United’s birthday message
Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has, on Friday, sent a lighthearted request to the Red Devils, surrounding Lionel Messi.
Messi on the move
The bombshell news of the summer thus far was of course forthcoming a little over 24 hours ago.
This came in the form of confirmation that Lionel Messi would not be committing his future to Barcelona, instead bringing an end to his 21-year stint with the club.
Just hours after it had been widely reported that an agreement between the two parties was close, the Blaugrana released a statement, admitting that they had essentially been left with no choice but to part with the club’s greatest-ever player.
This came as a result of ‘financial and structural obstacles’ laid in the path of the Catalans by none other than La Liga:
‘Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).’
‘As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.’

Widespread chatter, in turn, has since surrounded where Messi could end up next, with the legendary Argentine now available as a free agent.
To this point, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have been the clubs most persistently touted as potential landing spots, with the latter, this evening, having seemingly moved to the front of the queue for Messi:
Paris Saint-Germain are confident since last hours to sign Leo Messi. Negotiations are progressing well – up to Financial Fair Play approval, PSG are convinced they can complete the agreement soon. 🌟🇦🇷 #PSG

As outlined above, though, if the latest word on social media is anything to go by, then one individual who remains hopeful that the 6-time Ballon d’Or winner could yet end up at an altogether surprise new club is Robin van Persie.
In a series of posts across Twitter this afternoon, Manchester United wished their one-time striker a happy 38th birthday.
RvP, though, was quick to shift the subject away from himself with his ensuing reply, lightheartedly pleading with the Red Devils to ‘Announce Messi please’:
