Christensen on the up

Danish international Christensen has become a fairly crucial member of Chelsea’s backline of late.

He would struggle for minutes during the first half of last season, but was handed a number of starts in the Premier League following Thomas Tuchel’s arrival in late January.

Christensen has also started all three of the Blues’ league outings so far this term, helping his side to clean sheets vs Crystal Palace and Arsenal as well as securing a point against Liverpool despite going down to 10 men shortly before halftime.

However, despite regaining a starting spot under Tuchel, the defender’s long-term future at Chelsea has long been up in the air, with Christensen now in the final 12 months of his contract.

In turn, if the Dane were to reach January without penning fresh terms, he could sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club, and then leave for free next summer.

That scenario does not look set to play out, though. The Athletic reported at the back end of last month that Chelsea were close to finalising a new long-term contract with Christensen.

That contract was said to be a four-year deal with the option of an extra year:

No official announcement regarding the deal has yet been forthcoming.

However, Christensen has been asked about him signing a new deal with Chelsea during the current international break.

And, though he did not confirm he will be 100 per cent putting pen to paper on a new deal at Stamford Bridge, it does look as though that is very likely now, with the defender stating:

“I know a lot is being said right now. I can not say too much, but I think it looks good.”
