Amazon is working on a standalone app for sports content: report

Amazon is working on a standalone app for sports content: report is working on a standalone app for watching sports content, the news reported Wednesday, citing a source with direct knowledge of the plan.

Sports remain one of the biggest attractions for live viewing as American audiences increasingly shift from pay-TV subscriptions to streaming apps.

The move will likely complement Amazon’s efforts to double down on sports programming through its Prime Video service, a key channel for drawing consumers to its shopping platform.

Amazon already owns the rights to stream games including the National Football League’s Thursday Night Football franchise and Premier League football matches in the UK, giving it a better shot at competing with sports streaming leader Walt Disney. Co.

Last week, the Alphabet YouTube unit also signed a multi-year deal to exclusively stream the NFL’s Sunday Ticket games package in the United States.

According to the report, it was unclear when Amazon would roll out the sports app and if it would materialize.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

The company has been reviewing unprofitable business units and laying off staff to cover rising costs and a drop in demand as inflation-conscious consumers and businesses spend less.

In India, Amazon launched Prime Gaming for PC a few days ago, giving users access to various free PC games every month. It is a subscription game service that can be used with the Amazon Prime plan. As of December 2022, Prime Gaming is providing access to eight game titles.
