You know how anytime we hear Christmas the only one thing that comes to mind is “The birth of Christ”?   Errmm so how do we put this, okay so it is actually pagan. Hollup!! Wait a minute! Before you explode just check this out.

The origins of Christmas stem from both the pagan and Roman cultures. The Romans actually celebrated two holidays in the month of December. The first was Saturnalia, which was a two-week festival honoring their god of agriculture Saturn. On December 25th, they celebrated the birth of Mithra, their sun god.

When Christianity spread across Europe, the Christian clergy were not able to curb the pagan celebrations since nobody knew the birth date of Jesus, they adopted the pagan ritual into a celebration of His birthday.

Are you shocked yet?

Now let’s come to your favourite sugar daddy in red and white; Santa Claussss

Born in southern Turkey around 280, St Nicholas was executed for his faith. Coming from a Rich family he was praised for his generosity towards the poor. In honor of his passing, 6th December was declared a St Nicholas day. Legend has it that he tossed a gold coin from a window straight into a sock hanging on a Christmas tree. The real name was Sinta Klass (Klass is a shortened version of Nicholas). This is where Americanized Santa Claus comes from when the Europeans adapted to this public when they believed he gifts well-behaved children at the end of the year.

Now to the tree that’s not actually a tree;

CHRISTMAS TREE

The pagan culture decorated their homes with greens in anticipation of the spring to come. The Romans also decorated their temples with fir tree during saturnal and decorated them with bits of metal.

The tradition we are accustomed to today hails from Northern Europe, where Germanic pagan trees are used in the worship of the god Woden with candles and dried fruits. The tradition was incorporated into the Christian faith in Germany during the 1500s. They decorated trees in their homes with sweets, lights, and toys.

Immortalized by Notorious B. I. G; if you don’t know, now you know.
