West Ham knock out Manchester City on penalties

West Ham ended Manchester City’s domination of the Carabao Cup with a shock result, knocking them out on penalties in the fourth round of the competition.

Having downed Manchester United in the third round, there must have been sighs from Irons fans far and wide when it emerged that their next opponents were none other than Manchester City, the side that have won the last five consecutive Carabao Cups.

However, in a major upset, the east London club held their nerve to edge out Pep Guardiola and co. on penalties, after it finished 0-0 after 90 minutes. The Hammers were immaculate with their spot-kicks, meaning that Phil Foden’s early miss proved, ultimately, decisive, and sent the London Stadium into bedlam.

West Ham join Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Chelsea, Brentford, Sunderland and Leicester City in the quarter-finals of the competition, with the draw to be made on Saturday morning.

Who are the new favourites?

Given their history in the competition, it is no surprise to see that Manchester City were the bookies favourites to retain their crown once more this season, but that can obviously no longer happen.

So, who have the bookies opted for as the favourite for the competition now?

As per oddschecker, it is current Champions League holders Chelsea that have been awarded the title of favourites, coming in at 7/2 to win the competition. They are followed by Liverpool at 11/2, and Arsenal at 7/1.

Despite their heroics in the past two rounds, West Ham are still considered rank outsiders, at 14/1.

Will the cup go true to odds, and see Thomas Tuchel and co. lift it, or will it continue to weave it’s magic?
