Absence of Romelu Lukaku felt in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Burnley

Data confirms Chelsea failed to fill the Lukaku void

Chelsea will feel hard done today in the wake of a disappointing 1-1 draw against Burnley at Stamford Bridge in a match they dominated in all manner of respects while being served a frustrating reminder of just how much they miss key striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Blues peppered Sean Dyche’s men all afternoon in front of the home support in west London, registering 25-shots over the 90-minute battle.

But Thomas Tuchel’s table-topping outfit could not find a second goal for all their efforts, which were the most attempted by Chelsea in a Premier League home match that they failed to win since 2015 when their 26-shots against Crystal Palace was not enough to avoid a 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge.

German international Kai Havertz did manage to get on the scoresheet when he opened the scoring on 33-minutes after Reece James provided the service for the former Bayer Leverkusen wunderkind, but Chelsea failed to turn their dominant performance into a three-point haul after they came into the weekend on the back of a four-match winning streak in the Premier League.

Belgian forward still missing

Even if Romelu Lukaku was fit and available, there is no guarantee that the record Belgium goalscorer would have made the difference today.

The Antwerp-native started brightly in his second stint at Chelsea when he hit 3-goals in his first-three fixtures, but hit a bit of a dry spell after he went four league fixtures without a goal before his injury.

Still, even if he was not in the best of form before his injury, it can be postulated that the amount of chances that Chelsea managed to carve out today would certainly have given the RSC Anderlecht academy graduate a chance to get back on track in front of goal.
