A return to football on the cards? Ex-Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge training in Spain ahead of potential return

Daniel Sturridge’s injury woes

Daniel Sturridge certainly falls into the category of incredibly talented player whose career was ruined by injuries. Now 32 years old, the Englishman has been without a club since March 2020, when his contract with Turkish outfit Trabzonspor was terminated.

However, when fit he remains a lethal forward, providing 8 goal contributions (4 goals and 4 assists) in 11 Super Lig games in 2019/20. The problem for Sturridge, and any club willing to take him on, is that those times are few and far between.

Indeed, as per transfermarkt, the former Liverpool man has missed 144 games through injury in his 12-year career, almost half as many games as he has made senior appearances (322).

This makes him a difficult man to rely on, especially for those who need regular goalscorers.

Sturridge nets in behind-closed-doors friendly

However, after a year and a half out of the game, it appears as though Sturridge may have found a club willing to take a chance on him.

Step forward, Real Mallorca.

As per Spanish publication Marca, he has been training with the La Liga outfit since the 14th of July on a trial basis, although no assurances have been made about his future.

He did, however, find the back of the net in a behind-closed-doors friendly during the international break, taking to twitter to celebrate by saying:

“No better feeling than scoring goals. Even in behind closed doors games like I played today, when I scored it felt amazing. Feeling sharper and sharper as the days go by. Can’t wait to play a proper game whenever the day comes and show the world my talents. God is good”

It remains to be seen if Mallorca will offer him a full-time deal, but it would certainly please the football romantics were Sturridge to return to top flight football.
