6 ways to deal with awkward confrontations at work

Awkward confrontations not only exist in your everyday life but surprisingly, in your workplace as well!

We all can recall at least one awkward moment that we have faced in the office, whether it’s about getting even with your office nemesis or paying overdue bills of your lunch in front of everyone.

All employees can surely relate to that! If you’re looking for ways to avoid or tackle such awkward situations, then these simple ways will help you deal with such situations at work.

1. Arrogant or assertive

This is a problem many employees face. Choosing your words wisely so as to not appear arrogant in front of your managers is a tough task indeed. Studying and analysing your tone is the best way to approach this situation. You have to keep in mind that your tone shouldn’t appear to be overconfident or arrogant, but assertive enough to have a stand in your workplace.

2. Someone else taking the credit for your work

Projects require teamwork and taking advantage of such situations, some sly coworkers try to take the credit of your work in front of the boss. What you can do is speak up and present the project in front of your boss during your part so that while evaluating, your boss will remember who did all the talking.

3. Being interrupted when speaking

While presenting your work or even talking during discussions, there’s always someone who’s out there to interrupt you. If your coworker doesn’t respect your presence and value while talking, then it can be quite frustrating. And so, you need to speak up the first time this happens and firmly saying, “please wait till I finish my sentence” is a positive and assertive way to do that.

4. Making friends at the workplace

No matter how easy it may seem, lending the hand of friendship to your coworkers can be pretty awkward. Trying to make new friends in the workplace has greater chances of working if you invite your colleagues out for lunch or a beer after work. You need to know that there’s no wrong in asking to join a group of coworkers sitting together. That’s how you all can become a great team.

5. Wanting to achieve a work-life balance

Everyone deserves to have some rest after the long working hours at the office. But if you’re among a team of workaholics who prefer working till late to prove their competent nature, then you’re in for a fix. Talking to your manager about this situation or rather, completing all your tasks properly at the last hour is a good enough reason to leave at 6 p.m.

6. Coworkers don’t respect you

If you have been promoted to a higher position, you may find that some of your coworkers disrespecting or dismissing your orders blatantly. The first step is to show utter confidence in your new role and assert subtle work dominance over your colleagues. You also need to be specific and clear about what you expect from them so that they are informed about what they need to report to you.
