2022 World Cup: Polish Referee, Marciniak To Officiate Argentina Vs France Final

Polish referee Szymon Marciniak has been selected by FIFA to officiate 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France slated for Sunday.

Marciniak, who will be assisted by Paweł Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz, will make history by becoming the first Polish referee to take charge of a World Cup final.

Marciniak’s appointment will come as a blow to Anthony Taylor – who is still in Qatar – and Michael Oliver – who was sent home by FIFA.

According to Sports Center, FIFA Referee Chairman, Pierluigi Collina, selected Marciniak for the World Cup final at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday.

Marciniak was responsible for officiating France’s 2-1 win over Denmark in the group stages and Argentina’s 2-1 victory against Australia in the Last 16.

 

Early career

 

He was born in 1981 in Płock, Poland. He began his career as a football referee at the age of 21. Initially, he combined refereeing football matches with playing as an amateur footballer. In 2006, he switched to working as a football referee professionally. 

 

He refereed his first match in the top Polish professional league in 2009 at the GKS Bełchatów stadium. Since then, he has refereed more than 200 matches in Ekstraklasa having been appointed the head referee in the 2016 Polish Cup final match as well as the 2017 Polish SuperCup final.
