2022 Emmy nominations: Succession in the lead, HBO ahead of Netflix

The Emmy nominations for 2022 were announced Tuesday by JB Smoove and Melissa Fumero during a virtual ceremony. HBO’s estate landed 25 nominations, earning it the top spot, followed by Apple’s Ted Lasso and HBO’s The White Lotus tied for second with 20 nominations each. Hacks (17), Only Murders in the Building (17), Euphoria (16), Barry (14), Dopesick (14), Severance (14), Squid Game (14), Ozark (13), Stranger Things (13) , The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (12) and Pam & Tommy (10) were some of the other shows that were able to garner more than ten nominations.
HBO narrowly took the lead against Netflix with 108 nominations against the latter’s 105 nominations. Competition between these two platforms was even tighter last year — HBO (130) and Netflix (129).
It was a particularly big year of achievement for women. Women earned nearly half of the nominations in the scripted directing categories. Nearly 40% of nominations in the screenwriting categories are also said to be women.
The 2022 Emmy nominations saw 50 up-and-coming artists nominated in several different categories – Chadwick Boseman (What If…?), Elle Fanning (The Great), Andrew Garfield (Under the Banner of Heaven), Jung Ho-yeon (Squid Game), Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), Barack Obama (Our Great National Parks), Sebastian Stan (Pam & Tommy), and more.
The 74th Emmy Awards will air live from the Microsoft Theater on September 12 on NBC and will stream live on the Peacock streaming platform. At this time, there is no update on an Indian broadcaster for this event.
